Burundi President Calls for Peaceful 2027 Elections

Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye called for peaceful and inclusive 2027 elections during a meeting in Gitega on Friday, July 31, 2026. President Ndayishimiye emphasized that successful elections are an essential pillar for consolidating democracy and achieving Burundi's Vision. He stated that "Les élections concernent tous les Burundais. Elles intéressent davantage encore les partis politiques qui souhaitent accéder aux responsabilités à travers les urnes" (Elections concern all Burundians. They are of even greater interest to political parties that wish to accede to responsibilities through the ballot box). President Ndayishimiye added that "Les élections de 2027 devront se dérouler dans un climat de paix, de sérénité et d’inclusivité" (The 2027 elections must take place in a climate of peace, serenity, and inclusivity).

President's Vision for Democracy

The meeting, held in Gitega, focused on the theme "Tujane inzira imwe twese, dutegure amatora atagira agatosi," which translates to "Together, let's prepare free, transparent, and inclusive elections." President Evariste Ndayishimiye emphasized that Burundi represents a shared heritage belonging to all its citizens, who bear the responsibility to protect public assets, particularly during electoral cycles. He showed the importance of maintaining development efforts, urging Burundians to ensure that the election period does not impede ongoing socio-economic projects. President Ndayishimiye previously stated that "Les élections concernent tous les Burundais. Elles intéressent davantage encore les partis politiques qui souhaitent accéder aux responsabilités à travers les urnes," noting the broad relevance of the electoral process. He also affirmed that "Les élections de 2027 devront se dérouler dans un climat de paix, de sérénité et d’inclusivité."

Party Leaders' Input and Concerns

Leaders of various political parties commended the establishment of provincial and communal electoral commissions, noting that the consultation process for their formation was open and inclusive. This acknowledgment came during discussions regarding the upcoming 2027 elections.

Separately, Ceni President Prosper Ntahogwamiye addressed the use of the national identity card in the electoral process. He clarified that employing the national identity card as a reference document for voters is a political choice that requires consensus among stakeholders. Ntahogwamiye added that voter support lists would be posted publicly to ensure transparency.

Addressing Candidacy Document Hurdles

Political leaders expressed concerns regarding the extensive documentation required for presidential candidacies. They specifically noted the cost associated with obtaining certificates of nationality, noting each document costs 20,000 FBu and approximately two hundred are needed for supporters. President Evariste Ndayishimiye, acknowledging these issues, subsequently requested the Ceni to investigate methods of eliminating the nationality certificate requirement. He stressed that any such measure must not compromise the overall credibility of the electoral process. "Les élections concernent tous les Burundais. Elles intéressent davantage encore les partis politiques qui souhaitent accéder aux responsabilités à travers les urnes," President Ndayishimiye stated. He added, "Les élections de 2027 devront se dérouler dans un climat de paix, de sérénité et d’inclusivité."

Commitment to Ongoing Dialogue

President Evariste Ndayishimiye assured political party leaders that ongoing dialogue would be a permanent feature to ensure the 2027 elections proceed peacefully, free from tensions or disputes. President Ndayishimiye reiterated his view that "Les élections concernent tous les Burundais. Elles intéressent davantage encore les partis politiques qui souhaitent accéder aux responsabilités à travers les urnes" (Elections concern all Burundians. They are of even greater interest to political parties that wish to accede to responsibilities through the ballot box). He also emphasized that "Les élections de 2027 devront se dérouler dans un climat de paix, de sérénité et d’inclusivité" (The 2027 elections must take place in a climate of peace, serenity, and inclusivity).
