A significant donation of medicines, valued at over €120,000, was officially handed over to the Burundian Ministry of Public Health on Friday, May 15, 2026. This substantial contribution aims to bolster healthcare services in Burundi, with a specific focus on supporting the medical needs of Congolese refugees. The transfer of these essential supplies marks an important step in providing key medical aid to vulnerable populations within the country, directly addressing immediate health requirements and reinforcing the nation's capacity to respond to humanitarian challenges.

Health Needs of Refugees

The donated medicines are specifically designated for children and adults residing in various Congolese refugee camps across Burundi. These camps host a considerable number of individuals who have sought refuge in Burundi. Burundi has experienced a significant increase in its refugee population since 2025, leading to heightened demands on its already stretched healthcare infrastructure. The continuous influx of refugees often presents considerable challenges in providing adequate medical care, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly. This assistance is strategically designed to alleviate some of the pressure on local health services by supplying essential pharmaceuticals directly to those most in need within the camps. The initiative shows the ongoing efforts to support the well-being and health of displaced individuals within Burundi's borders.

International Collaboration

The donation originated from a collaborative effort involving several key international and local partners. The Croix Rouge du Burundi, working in close collaboration with the Croix Rouge de France and the Agence française de développement (AFD), channeled this vital aid through the French Embassy in Burundi. This multi-faceted partnership notes the commitment of various organizations to address humanitarian needs effectively. Anselme Katiyunguruza, Secretary General of the Red Cross of Burundi, affirmed that the provision of these medicines would significantly contribute to improving the health conditions of both the refugees and the communities living around the camps, fostering a more strong public health environment for all. Jérémie Grand, Chargé d'affaires at the French Embassy in Burundi, expressed profound appreciation for the Burundian government's hospitality and continued support towards the Congolese refugees. Grand further noted the critical importance of continued international solidarity and sustained cooperation to support vulnerable populations in the region. This joint initiative clearly shows the unwavering commitment of all partner organizations to address pressing humanitarian needs in Burundi.

Official Statements

Emmanuel Nizigiyimana, Director General of Care Provision, stated that the medicine donation arrived at a key time to ensure the health of refugees. Nizigiyimana noted that diseases often appear and spread more rapidly where many people gather, such as in refugee camps, emphasizing the donation's vital role in treating both the refugees and the surrounding Burundian populations who may also be affected. He called on other technical and financial partners to follow this exemplary initiative and provide further assistance to refugees, stressing the collective responsibility to support displaced communities. The Director General's remarks noted the ongoing and pressing need for medical supplies to effectively manage public health in refugee-hosting areas, ensuring that both refugees and host communities receive necessary care. His appeal to other partners showed the necessity of sustained international support and collaborative efforts for humanitarian endeavors in Burundi.
