Composition and Mandate

Article 38 of the Burundian Electoral Code mandates that members of provincial and communal commissions are designated while respecting ethnic and gender balances. The composition of CEPI-Bujumbura reflects this, drawing its members from various sectors including the administration, political parties, civil society, and religious confessions. This multi-stakeholder approach aims to ensure broad representation within the electoral body, bringing diverse perspectives to the oversight process. CEPI-Bujumbura is specifically composed of thirteen members, including eight of Hutu ethnicity and five of Tutsi ethnicity, in addition to the five women members, further illustrating the adherence to the code's requirements for ethnic and gender diversity. The province of Bujumbura, which has eleven communes, will be overseen by these newly presented officials. Their mandate includes upholding the electoral code across these communes, contributing to the integrity of future elections within the province. The diverse backgrounds of the members are intended to foster a full understanding of local needs and electoral procedures, thereby strengthening the democratic process.

Presentation Ceremony

During the presentation ceremony, twelve of the thirteen appointed members of CEPI-Bujumbura were present. This high attendance rate showed the importance of the occasion and the commitment of the newly formed body. The formal introduction of the commission's members marks a key step in preparing for electoral activities in the region, providing clarity on the leadership responsible for electoral oversight. Their presence showed the readiness of the newly formed body to commence its mandate, demonstrating a collective commitment to the electoral process. The commission is now tasked with actively upholding the electoral code throughout the province of Bujumbura, ensuring that all electoral activities comply with established legal frameworks. This initial gathering noted the collective commitment to ensuring adherence to established guidelines for upcoming elections. The members present represent diverse backgrounds, contributing to the full nature of the electoral oversight body and reinforcing the principles of transparency and fairness.

President's Expectations

CEPI-Bujumbura is composed of thirteen members, including eight of Hutu ethnicity and five of Tutsi ethnicity.
