Construction of the Ecofo Kiziba school officially commenced in Kiziba, Mbuye commune, Burundi, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with the laying of the first stone. This key event marks a significant step for the local community, as the educational facility is intended to serve students in the area, addressing a critical need for accessible schooling. Local officials indicated that the entire project will be financed exclusively through the commune's own resources, utilizing 'fonds propres' to cover all construction costs, thereby demonstrating a commitment to self-reliance in community development. The initiation of this project has been met with considerable enthusiasm from residents, who have long awaited an educational institution closer to home.

Community Drives Construction Efforts

The local population mobilized quickly to open a road leading to the construction site and transport gravel for the project, showcasing a profound sense of communal responsibility. Communal Administrator Éric Nkurunziza praised the inhabitants' commitment to community development, noting their rapid mobilization for the school's construction. Nkurunziza noted the community's proactive role in facilitating access to the site and supplying necessary materials, emphasizing this collaboration as a model for other areas within the commune. He further encouraged inhabitants of other hills to emulate Kiziba's example, specifically in maintaining and developing their community roads to support local initiatives and improve connectivity. The administrator showed the importance of such communal efforts for broader development goals within Mbuye, suggesting that similar self-help approaches could accelerate progress across various sectors. This collective action not only aids in the physical construction but also fosters a stronger sense of ownership and pride among the residents.

Administrator Praises Commitment

The Ecofo Kiziba school is strategically situated on the Kiziba hill, within the Mbuye zone of Muramvya commune, positioning it to serve a wide array of students from the surrounding localities. The construction project aims to fulfill a long-standing demand from the residents of Kiziba hill for an educational facility in their area, a demand that has now culminated in concrete action. This new school is expected to significantly reduce travel times for students, providing them with better access to education and potentially improving attendance and academic performance. The initiative reflects the administration's responsiveness to the needs of its constituents and its dedication to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Broader Development Initiatives

Beyond the school construction, the local administration is also promoting other initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare and economic prospects of the community. The population was encouraged to enhance the cultivation of banana, sorghum, and millet. This initiative aims to foster the production of local traditional drinks, supporting economic activity within the community by creating new income streams and promoting local agricultural products. By boosting these traditional crops, the commune hopes to strengthen its agricultural base and preserve cultural practices. In a separate development, communal authorities have issued a one-week deadline for the removal of alcoholic beverages considered harmful to health from all bars operating within Muramvya commune. This directive seeks to address public health concerns related to certain drink products available in the region, reflecting a broader commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the inhabitants. This measure is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all goods and services available to the public meet health and safety standards.
