Joyce Harerimana was born on 1 July 1964 in the former Butezi commune. This birthplace remains a significant part of her identity as she continues her work in the region. She obtained a D3 diploma in secretarial studies from the Lycée technique des filles de Bukeye in 1983 and began working as a secretary in 1986. Her early professional training provided her with the organizational skills that she later applied to her mediation efforts. Gérard Harerimana, chief of Munyinya hill, notes that her interventions produce tangible results in the community.

Early Life and Career

Joachin Niyibona first met Joyce Harerimana in 1992 upon his arrival as a student at Lycée Nyankanda. Their professional paths later converged at the same institution, where they worked alongside one another. Reflecting on the environment during their tenure, Joachin Niyibona, director of Lycée Nyankanda, states, "Il y a eu des crises. Au sein même de l’école, des conflits entre élèves ont éclaté. Mais, grâce à la vigilance des éducateurs, dont Joyce, rien de grave ne s’est produit. Ils intervenaient pour séparer les élèves et empêcher que les conflits conduisent à des tueries." Marie Rose Nduwimana, a neighbor, recalls the impact of Harerimana's presence on those around her. Describing her personal experience of this welcoming nature, Marie Rose Nduwimana notes, "Elle m’a permis de me sentir comme chez moi."

Courage During Times of Crisis

During the 1993 violence, Joyce Harerimana provided shelter to people fleeing conflict at her home and the Lycée Nyankanda. These efforts offered a place of refuge for those displaced by the unrest during that period. Her home became a sanctuary for many who were struggling to find safety in an uncertain environment.

Current activities involve Joyce Harerimana mediating disputes between Burundian residents and Congolese refugees. These conflicts frequently center on water access and agricultural land use in the area. By facilitating dialogue between the two groups, she addresses tensions arising from the shared use of limited local resources. Her role as a mediator is vital, as she helps both parties navigate the complexities of living side-by-side. She listens to the concerns of the Burundian residents while also considering the needs of the Congolese refugees, ensuring that both sides feel heard during the resolution process. Through her consistent presence and willingness to step into difficult situations, she maintains a sense of order on Munyinya hill. Her work remains a testament to the importance of localized conflict resolution.
