An atelier, or workshop, focused on sensitizing participants and disseminating information about the Convention and the law on the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in Burundi was recently organized. This event aimed to translate legal commitments into tangible improvements for persons with disabilities within Butanyerera province. The workshop sought to ensure that established legal frameworks are actively implemented, fostering greater inclusion and protection across the region. Specifically, the objective of the workshop was to transform these legal commitments into concrete reality for persons with disabilities residing in Butanyerera province, thereby bridging the gap between legislation and lived experience. The initiative showed the importance of both awareness and practical application of disability rights.

Workshop Organizers and Goals

The workshop took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. This significant event was organized through a collaboration involving multiple entities, including the organization « We social movement », the confederation of trade unions, and the organization Lead of the network INSPIR Burundi. These groups worked together to facilitate the event in the province of Butanyerera, Burundi. The initiative aimed to raise awareness and educate participants on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, alongside local legislation designed to promote and protect the rights of individuals with disabilities within the region. The collaboration sought to translate legal frameworks into practical actions for enhanced inclusion, emphasizing the critical need for sensitization and dissemination of these vital legal instruments. The organizers noted that a deeper understanding of these legal provisions is key for effective advocacy and implementation.

Challenges Faced by Persons with Disabilities

Persons living with disabilities in Butanyerera province continue to face numerous challenges that restrict their engagement in social, economic, political, and cultural aspects of life. These persistent barriers limit their full participation and integration into society. Leaders of associations representing persons with disabilities acknowledge administrative efforts to address these issues. However, they contend that many provisions within existing protection laws are not yet fully implemented, despite the laws being in place. This discrepancy between legal provision and practical application remains a significant concern for these associations. They advocate for increased representation of persons with disabilities in decision-making bodies, emphasizing that their voices are essential in shaping policies that directly affect them. They call for easier access to public services, which are often inaccessible, and strengthened resources to meet their specific needs, emphasizing the gap between legal frameworks and practical application. These challenges show the urgent need for full and enforced measures to ensure equality and dignity for all.

Calls for Action and Future Hopes

The Butanyerera workshop, themed « promouvoir l’inclusion, l’égalité et la dignité, mieux connaître les droits des personnes handicapées pour mieux agir » (promote inclusion, equality, and dignity, better understand the rights of persons with disabilities to act better), concluded with clear calls for action. Participants urged administrative officials to systematically integrate the dimension of disability into all policies, programs, and services intended for the population. This integration is seen as critical to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not overlooked in public planning and resource allocation, thereby fostering a more inclusive society. The workshop’s theme itself served as a powerful reminder of the imperative to move beyond mere acknowledgment to proactive and informed action.

Associations representing persons with disabilities have consistently advocated for improved implementation of existing laws. They argue that effective implementation is essential to allow persons with disabilities to participate fully in national life. These groups emphasize that while legal frameworks are in place, their practical application often falls short, creating barriers to genuine inclusion and equality. The leaders of associations for persons with disabilities specifically request increased representation in decision-making bodies, asserting that their unique perspectives are invaluable for policy development. They also demand easier access to public services, which are fundamental for daily life, and strengthened means to address their specific needs, ensuring that support systems are strong and responsive. The workshop served as a vital platform to reiterate these demands and reinforce the collective commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in Butanyerera province.
