The Commission Vérité et Réconciliation (CVR) met with officials of the Anglican Church of Burundi on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The meeting took place in the political capital Gitega. Discussions between the CVR and the Eglise anglicane du Burundi focused on the teaching of peace and forgiveness, alongside efforts towards national reconciliation. These key discussions specifically centered on the profound importance of fostering both peace and forgiveness as foundational elements for achieving lasting national reconciliation within the country.

CVR's Mission and Goals

Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, Chairman of the Commission Vérité et Réconciliation (CVR), stated that revealing the truth about past painful events is key for citizens to overcome lingering resentment and divisions. He emphasized that gaining a clear understanding of historical injustices and suffering is a necessary step for the populace to move beyond the deep-seated grievances that have historically divided communities. He urged religious leaders to continue their spiritual mission by guiding the faithful in overcoming past traumas. Ndayicariye showed the significant role religious institutions play in providing spiritual and moral support to individuals grappling with the aftermath of conflict. Ndayicariye emphasized the importance of truth-telling in fostering national unity. He also extended an invitation to perpetrators of reprehensible acts, encouraging them to acknowledge their faults and seek forgiveness. This call for accountability and contrition from those who committed harmful deeds was presented as a vital component of the healing process. Concurrently, Ndayicariye called upon victims to cultivate forgiveness, seeing it as a vital step towards healing and reconciliation within Burundi. He noted that while challenging, the act of forgiveness by victims is instrumental in breaking cycles of retribution and fostering a path towards peace.

Anglican Church's Commitment

Anglican Church officials affirmed that reconciliation constitutes a fundamental mission entrusted by God, viewing it as integral to their ministry in Burundi. They articulated that their spiritual mandate compels them to actively participate in efforts aimed at mending societal rifts and fostering harmony. The officials reiterated their availability to actively contribute to the national reconciliation process. This commitment extends to leveraging their community reach and moral authority to support initiatives that promote understanding and unity. Their statements showed the church's unwavering commitment to supporting efforts aimed at fostering peace and healing within the country, recognizing these as core tenets of their faith and service.

Call for Integrity in Reconciliation

Anglican Church representatives emphasized the need for members of the Commission Vérité et Réconciliation (CVR) to demonstrate integrity, impartiality, and moral probity in their work. They stated that such qualities are essential for the credibility and effectiveness of the reconciliation process. The church officials stressed that the public's trust in the CVR's work hinges directly on the perceived fairness and ethical conduct of its members. The church officials warned that any form of partiality displayed by the commission could exacerbate the suffering of victims. They elaborated that a biased approach would not only fail to deliver justice but could also deepen existing wounds and mistrust among affected communities. They stressed that a lack of impartiality would compromise efforts towards achieving lasting reconciliation within Burundi, potentially undermining the entire process and its intended outcomes for national healing. The officials made it clear that maintaining an unbiased stance is critical to ensuring that the reconciliation efforts yield meaningful and sustainable results for all Burundians.

Broader Context of Reconciliation

Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, president of the Commission Vérité et Réconciliation (CVR), affirmed that the recent engagement with the Anglican Church leaders formed an integral part of the commission's broader mandate. He indicated that the meeting aligns with the CVR's ongoing mission to uncover facts surrounding past tragedies and to advance the process of national reconciliation. This outreach effort shows the commission's commitment to engaging various societal stakeholders in its pursuit of truth and healing for Burundi. The CVR aims to ensure a full approach to addressing historical grievances and fostering unity across the nation, recognizing that collaboration with religious institutions is key to achieving widespread acceptance and participation in the reconciliation journey.
