Burundi's electoral commission, Ceni, convened a key meeting with electoral partners in Bujumbura on Friday, May 8, 2026, to discuss the upcoming 2027 presidential election. This gathering served as a foundational step in the full planning process for the nation's next presidential poll. During the session, the commission outlined the necessary financial resources for the electoral process, indicating a significant budget requirement to ensure the smooth and effective execution of the election. The total budget to be mobilized for the election is 112.006 billion FBu. This initial engagement marks a key step in the preparatory phase for the next presidential poll, setting the financial and logistical groundwork for the electoral cycle. The detailed discussions showed Ceni's commitment to transparency and thorough preparation in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

Key Election Dates Announced

The presidential election in Burundi is officially scheduled to take place on Monday, May 3, 2027. This definitive date was announced as a central component of the full electoral calendar released by the Commission Électorale Nationale Indépendante (Ceni). The electoral body meticulously detailed the timeline for various stages of the election, providing clarity for all stakeholders and the general public. The official campaign period for the election is projected to run for three weeks, commencing on April 10, 2027, and concluding on April 30, 2027, according to the outlined timeline. This period will allow candidates to present their platforms and engage with the electorate across the country.

Following the election, the oath of office for the winner is slated for June 18, 2027. This date is set in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Code, which dictates the post-election procedures for presidential transitions. Preparations for the election will commence well in advance of the polling day, involving several key organizational milestones. The establishment of the Commissions Électorales Communales Indépendantes (Ceci) is planned for July 2026. These communal commissions will play a vital role in organizing the polls at the local level, ensuring that electoral processes are managed efficiently and effectively within communities. Ceni confirmed that voter cards issued for the 2025 elections will remain valid for the upcoming 2027 presidential election, streamlining the voter registration process and reducing logistical complexities. This decision aims to facilitate participation and ensure continuity in voter identification.

Budgetary Framework for 2027 Polls

The total cost for the 2027 presidential election in Burundi is estimated to exceed 115.876 billion FBu, according to figures released by Ceni. This full financial projection accounts for all necessary expenditures throughout the electoral process, from initial planning and voter registration to polling day operations and post-election activities. The commission provided a detailed breakdown of the budgetary allocation for different phases of the election, offering key insight into the financial planning and resource management required for such a large-scale national event. This detailed financial framework is intended to ensure that all operational needs are met and that the election can proceed without financial impediments.

A significant portion of the total estimated cost is specifically allocated to the first round of the presidential election. Ceni specified that the budget for this initial voting phase stands at 87.258 billion FBu. This substantial amount is intended to cover a wide array of essential expenses, including voter registration drives, the acquisition of necessary electoral materials such as ballot papers and polling station equipment, extensive logistical operations for distributing materials and personnel, and the staffing requirements for the primary election event across all polling centers. These funds are critical for establishing and maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the first round.

Should a second round be required, Ceni has provisioned a separate and dedicated budget for this contingency. The estimated cost for a potential second round of the presidential election is 28.617 billion FBu. This allocation ensures that adequate financial resources would be readily available to conduct a run-off vote if no candidate secures an outright majority in the first round. This additional budget covers the renewed logistical and operational requirements, including the printing of new ballots, further transportation, and continued staffing, demonstrating Ceni's foresight in planning for all potential electoral outcomes.

Ceni President's Call for Engagement

The available budget for the upcoming electoral process currently stands at over 3.869 billion FBu. This initial funding will support the preliminary phases of preparation while the remaining 112.006 billion FBu is mobilized. Ceni has outlined the operational details for voting day, stating that polling will take place from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM on May 3, 2027. This specific timeframe is designed to allow ample opportunity for citizens to cast their ballots while ensuring the timely closure of polling stations for counting. Preparations for the election also include the establishment of the Provincial Independent Electoral Commissions (Cepi), which are scheduled to be set up in June 2026. These provincial bodies will oversee the communal commissions and ensure coordination at a higher administrative level. A partial voter enrollment period is planned for September 2026, according to the electoral body's timeline. This period will allow new eligible voters to register and existing voters to update their information, further enhancing the inclusivity of the electoral roll. The Ceni President emphasized the importance of collaboration with all electoral partners to ensure a transparent and credible election.
