Muhanga commune in Burundi has launched new initiatives to expand access to potable water, responding to significant disparities in water availability across its territory. Currently, only 27 of the commune's 81 hills have access to potable water, noting a critical need for intervention. To address this substantial gap, the commune plans to implement several full projects designed to significantly improve water access for its residents. These broad initiatives include the establishment of new water adduction systems, drilling additional boreholes to tap into new water sources, installing modern pumping systems to ensure efficient distribution, protecting existing water sources from degradation, and actively combating water pollution to improve overall water quality and availability for residents. The overall strategy aims to ensure that a greater number of households and communities within Muhanga commune gain reliable access to safe drinking water.

Expanding Infrastructure and Services

Significant construction work for the Kaguruka-Musama AEP (Potable Water Supply) is currently underway and nearing completion, representing a key component of these efforts. These developments are part of broader actions to construct new potable water supply (AEP) networks, specifically targeting areas that previously lacked adequate service or had no access at all. The commune is committed to extending its reach to underserved communities. Additionally, a substantial portion of the existing water infrastructure is undergoing critical rehabilitation. Specifically, 11 out of 16 existing water infrastructures, which collectively include 45 public fountains, are being upgraded and repaired. These full projects aim to improve both the geographical reach and the reliability of water services across the commune, ensuring that more residents benefit from consistent and clean water provision. The focus is not only on building new systems but also on optimizing the performance of current facilities to maximize their efficiency and lifespan.

An extension of the Makaba-Muhanga AEP was successfully completed in April 2026. This specific extension was meticulously designed to supply potable water to the Mwendo hill, directly addressing the long-standing water needs of that particular community. This achievement shows the commune's commitment to targeted interventions that bring tangible benefits to specific populations. The various initiatives are strategically focused on enhancing water access across the entirety of Muhanga commune, targeting both the installation of new infrastructure in previously unserved areas and the key improvement and modernization of existing facilities. This dual approach ensures full coverage and sustained quality of water supply.

Protecting Water Resources

Planned actions for water resource preservation in Muhanga commune are extensive and multi-faceted, reflecting a deep understanding of environmental stewardship. These measures include the systematic development of new water intakes to diversify sources, strong protection of existing sources from environmental damage and encroachment, and the rigorous implementation of measures to combat pollution, thereby safeguarding water purity. Reforestation efforts are also strategically scheduled for protection zones surrounding these vital water resources, recognizing the critical role of healthy ecosystems in maintaining water quality and quantity. Alongside these essential physical interventions and infrastructure developments, the commune regularly conducts awareness campaigns. These campaigns are specifically focused on promoting good hygiene practices, improving sanitation standards within communities, and encouraging the rational management of water resources among residents. These educational initiatives aim to cultivate a culture of responsible water use and environmental consciousness, complementing infrastructure development efforts to safeguard the quality and long-term availability of water for all residents.

Ensuring Continuity and Quality

Rehabilitation and regular maintenance of existing water infrastructure have been strategically prioritized in Muhanga commune. This heightened focus stems from observations of recurring breakdowns and a noticeable reduction in water output observed in various facilities across the network. Addressing these identified issues is critical to restoring full functionality and efficiency to the commune's vital water supply systems. To further ensure reliable and uninterrupted potable water access, a system of permanent technical monitoring has been meticulously implemented. This ongoing oversight mechanism is specifically designed to detect and address potential issues proactively, often before they escalate into major disruptions. By continuously supervising the performance of the water infrastructure, the commune aims to safeguard the continuous provision of essential water services to its residents. The commune's full strategy therefore emphasizes both restorative actions for current infrastructure deficiencies and preventative measures through constant supervision and proactive management, ensuring long-term sustainability and quality of water provision.
